History Of Sports Radio Stations In Nigeria



The history of sports radio station in Nigeria can be traced back to 2002 when Dr. Larry Izamoje set up Brila FM Lagos the considered as Africa's first sports radio station.

What's sports radio?
Sports Radio is also known as Sports Talk Radio, is a radio format/genre focused entirely to discussion and broadcasting of sporting events to the audience (Listeners).

Research and findings have revealed that sports program on either TV or Radio has a wide audience appeal that drives considerable traffic for the station.
According to Wikipedia, the first Sports Talk Show was hosted by Bill Mazer in March 1964 on New York based radio station, WNBC(AM).
To sum it up, Sports centered radio station typically depends on drawing attention of an audience that fits advertiser-friendly especially the youth.

SPORTS RADIO STATION IN NIGERIA AS OF DECEMBER 2021 INCLUDE BRILA FM NIGERIA, PRIME SPORTS RADIO 104.9 FM ENUGU AND EAGLE 7 FM 103.7 ABEOKUTA

* Undoubtedly, Brila 88.9 FM Lagos is the first Sports Radio Station in Nigeria if not the whole Africa. It's the pioneer broadcast station to focus only on broadcasting sporting events and programme. Brila FM Nigeria is managed and operated by Brila Media LTD that owns Brila Sports TV (online TV),   Brila FM 88.9 Lagos founded in October 1 2002; Brila FM 88.9 Abuja launched in 2006; Brila FM 88.9 FM Onitsha & Brila FM 88.9 Kaduna both was established in 2011 while Brila FM 101.1 FM Port Harcourt commenced transmission on 10th of November, 2021. Brila FM chiefly broadcast in Nigeria Pidgin and English Language.

* Prime Sports Radio Enugu: This is the Nigeria's Second Sports Radio Station located at No 1, Temple Avenue, GRA, Enugu State. Prime Sports Radio Enugu started transmitting on October 22, 2021 on the spectrum of 104.9 MHz Frequency Modulation Band from its base. It's the sister station to  Dream 92.5 FM Enugu, subsidiary of Prime and Power Media Limited owned by former deputy president of the Nigeria Senate, Prof. Ike Ekweremadu. Prime Sports 104.9 FM speaks Igbo, English and Pidgin.

* The third station on list is Eagle7 FM 103.7 Abeokuta. 🦅7  FM is a soon-to-be-launched sports radio station in Nigeria. Eagle 103.7 FM will be operating on the spectrum 103.7 MHz Frequency Modulation Band from Wasimi, suburb of Abeokuta in Ogun state. Eagle7 FM Abeokuta is a division of Worldwide Sports Limited, owned by African Football Legend, Cheif Patrick Segun Odegbami professionally known as Mathematical 7.

Equally, Internet-only radio sports radio stations are not left out in Nigeria. Some online-based sports radio stations in Nigeria include Sports Flames Radio, Reel Radio NG, Goal Intense FM, SoccerHub Radio, Elegbete Radio, Dortmond Sports Radio International, Gallery Sports Radio  Football Radio FM Abuja (defunct), perfect sports radio (defunct) among others.

Also, there are some prominent sports radio station in the world which include but not limited to Talksport, BBC 5 Live, ESPN, Sports Byline Radio USA, Fox Sports Radio, NBC sports radio, CBS Radio, SportNet Radio, just to mention a few.

Ayefele establishes Another Radio Station, Blast FM In Ibadan

One of the Top 10 Radio station Owners in Nigeria, also the Chairman of Fresh FM Nigeria (Yinka Ayefele Limited), Dr. Joel Yinka Ayefele has added another feather to his cap by floating a new FM station in Ibadan, named Blast FM Ibadan. RadioReporterNG gathered that the station, Blast FM Ibadan will operate as an urban comtempory station but the frequency Modulation of the station is yet to be disclosed.
