Andrzej Duda: Polish president vetoes controversial media law

Polish President Andrzej Duda has vetoed a controversial media ownership law that critics said was intended to silence a US-owned TV station critical of the government. The law would have prevented companies from outside the European Economic Area from controlling Polish media outlets. If passed, the US-based Discovery group would have had to sell its stake in the news network, TVN24. Officials argued the law intended to limit the influence of hostile states. The ruling Law and Justice Party (PiS) has long said foreign corporations hold too much power over Polish media and rushed the bill through parliament earlier this month. But critics said the move was intended to attack TVN24, Poland's most watched news channel and a network whose reporters have often been critical of the conservative government. TVN24's parent, TVN, is owned by Discovery via a Dutch-based company to get around an existing ban on non-European firms owning more than 49% of Polish media companies. President

Nigeria Targets $400m From Radio, TV Advert Revenue

The Nigerian government is targeting to rake in the sum of $400 million annual revenue from radio and television advertisements. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who stated this at the inauguration of audience measurement taskforce yesterday, regretted that despite its huge population, Nigeria’s broadcast advertising market ranked third in Africa, behind South Africa and Kenya. The minister noted that Nigeria with a population thrice more than South Africa, was only able to rake in $309 million from the advertising market in 2016, as against South Africa’s $1.3 billion. “The immediate challenge before us, therefore, is to bring the under-performing Nigeria TV and radio advertising market to what it should be, which is two or three times what it is now. “If we do that, it could result in additional US$400 million revenue or more in the industry in the next three years,” Mohammed predicted. According to the minister, audience measurement will play a critical role

Media and the society

They expose the society members to government plans, action and policy, they also keep the government on their toes. Furthermore, the role of mass media in nation building can never be over emphasised right from pre-independence, independence and post-independence era. They are used as tools by the sitting government in running its day-to-day activities and it also serve as a channel used by the citizens of any    country to channel their message to the government.
