NBC Staff Accuse Lai Mohammed Of Fraudulent Award Of 30 Radio Licences

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has been accused by staff of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) of securing presidential approval for radio licenses for 30 unvetted and unprocessed companies. The staff, who described themselves as Concerned NBC staff, made the allegation in a petition dated 19 March and addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari. According to the petition, the licenses were awarded without the knowledge and input of the NBC, which they described as unprecedented in the commission’s history. “Broadcasting in Nigeria is in grave danger and national security has been breached, because no company is expected to be issued a license before passing through the processing by the regulatory agency, the NBC; and only after such a company has been thoroughly vetted by security authorities in Nigeria. “In the case of the 30 new companies that the Minister of Information has just secured approval for, they are companies owned by friends, political asso

Broadcast Stations Gasping For Breath, BON Cries Out

The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), a body representing broadcast stations in Nigeria, has cried out over the skyrocketing costs of operation following the high cost of petrol and diesel, saying broadcast stations are “gasping for breath.” The BON said the broadcast stations which it described as a “stabilising factor in maintaining political stability, security and peace of the country,” are under serious threat due to the harsh economic environment. Executive Secretary of BON, Dr Yemisi Bamgbose, in a statement said if nothing is done urgently to arrest the current trend, the stations might shut down, noting this would pave way for the media space to be littered with fake news. According to the organisation, there are ominous signs that danger of high magnitude is looming in Nigeria as the conventional media, that has been the stabilising factor in maintaining political stability, security and peace of the country is under serious threat due to the harsh economic environ

The Malian government says it will suspend broadcasts of Radio France Internationale and France 24 television in the country. The announcement followed reports by French media and a rights group that the Malian army has committed human rights abuses in recent months. Mali's military government issued a statement Thursday that it will "initiate proceedings" to "suspend, until further notice" RFI and France 24 broadcasts in Mali. The move came after RFI and Human Rights Watch reported on human rights abuse allegations against Mali's army. The government said the allegations are false and are part of a "strategy aimed at destabilizing the transition, demoralizing the Malian people, and discrediting the valiant armed forces." Human Rights Watch published a report on Tuesday that included alleged witness accounts of executions and other abuses committed by Malian soldiers and, separately, by Islamist extremists. The report also includes interviews with

Avuxeni FM, Zimbabwe first licensed commmunity radio go off

The Herald The usually serene town of Chiredzi reverberated to Shangani traditional music and dance on February 13, Avuxeni when the first licensed community radio station in Zimbabwe, went on air. The birth of the new station out of the 14 licensed community radio stations was a dawn of a new era for the people in the Lowveld who had been receiving radio signals from neighbouring countries such as South Africa and Mozambique for over four decades. Avuxeni, which is short for "Va le vuxeni", means people of the east and was adopted as a greeting slogan by the Vatsonga (Shangani) people, who dominate the Lowveld area from Mwenezi to the east right up to Malipati on the fringes of the Limpopo Valley. It is because of the role of radio, that Governments across Africa sought to extend information dissemination by coming up with community based stations. These have since become important support systems for information dissemination in a world that is increasingly becoming hostile
